In der Landtagswahl 2000 kam Thomas Rother neu in den Landtag, direkt gewählt in seinem Wahlkreis 42 (Lübeck-Nord). In den Landtagswahlen 2005 und 2009 holte er den Wahlkreis 35 (Lübeck-West) ebenfalls direkt, wie auch 2012 den Wahlkreis 32 (Lübeck-Ost). In der Landtagswahl 2017 wurde er mit 30,9% der Erststimmen erneut für Lübeck-Ost gewählt.
